Caroline Whelan was born and raised in St. John's, NL. She attended Memorial University where she earned a B.A.(hons). She received her Master of Arts (hons) from the University of Winsor, Ontario, and did her PHD work at the University of Toronto. Caroline was the recipient of over thirty provincial, national and international awards and scholarships, and is a published author. For 25 years, Caroline worked as a professor, first at the University of Toronto, and then at Memorial University and Queen's College in St. John's. During this time, she also worked with children in various settings in a volunteer capacity. Caroline’s volunteer work also included chaplaincy work at HRMP. Caroline's greatest joy is her two sons. While raising her children, she noticed the struggle that families have, to spend quality time together as kids are involved in more and more activities. She knew firsthand how impossibly busy families are, and that homework was a part of the struggle. From these observations, and her desire to help, Caroline grew LearnStar and works hard every day to make LearnStar a continued success.
LearnStar is not only involved in the growth of children in our community but also in the growth of the community as well. In 2001, Caroline founded a toy drive called "Christmas Presence" to collect toys for children at Christmas. The drive specifically aims to help the working poor who work hard and do not fall under the help of any organization. The organization brings toys to as many as 20 families, approximately 35 children every year. A few years later she joined a project with a friend to bring Easter baskets to the children of inmates. When her friend died, she named the charity "Rick's Wish Foundation" and continues it to this day.
